The VEX Robotics Competition is a globally recognized program where students design, build, and program robots to compete in dynamic challenges. VEX fosters skills in STEM, teamwork, and innovation. As a builder, backup driver, head of scouting, head of notebooking, and head of social media and communications, I contributed to multiple facts of our team’s success. I developed and implemented strategies for robot construction, led scouting efforts to analyze competitors, maintained detailed engineering notebooks, and managed the team’s public presence. This experience enhanced my technical expertise, leadership, and communication skills, preparing me to excel in collaborative and competitive environments.
I compete in VEX Robotics competitions at an international level with my team, 4610C. Each year, my team designs, builds and programs several robots to accomplish a new engineering challenge. The competitions have two main components:
Skills (Solo): Score maximum points from one minute of driving through autonomous programming + maximum points in one minute of remote controlled driving. The highest combined score from each type of run determines the rankings.
Match Play (2v2): For each match, two teams form an alliance to compete against another alliance team in a two-minute match. Each match begins with 15 seconds of autonomous programming followed by one minute 45 seconds of remote control driving. a Each tournament opens with round-robin style qualifying matches. The top teams then proceed to an elimination bracket to determine the winners.
My Role: I have been a builder, and also lead the team for notebooking and scouting to form strong alliances with other teams at competitions.
Team Size: Our 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 teams only had five members (most teams have more than ten people). Thus, we needed to be incredibly focused and efficient, designing prototypes with CAD (Computer Aided Design).
